Website Marketing

All businesses all over the world need a website to help get their marketing message across to a wider audience and promote themselves to potential new customers.  Given the importance of websites to a business’ marketing success web design is becoming increasingly important.  Clients, rightly or wrongly, will often judge a new supplier / provider on the basis of their website... has it been designed well? Does it look professional or as though it has been cobbled together between pieces of homework? In short “Does this website give me the confidence to contact this business?”....  If the answer is ‘yes’ then the website’s design has done it’s bit, if the answer is ‘no’ then poor website design could be holding your business back!

So what are the main attributes of good website design?  The answers are, in the main, are in line with common sense, for instance:

·         Is it clearly obvious as soon as you see the home page what the site is about and the name of the organisation that it relates to?

·         Is it structured well and easy to navigate or do you find yourself hunting round for information?

·         Does the site look credible?  Are there lots of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors etc?

·         Does the logo and style of the site fit with the product / service the business is offering?

 Website design

Other website design issues are to do with how the site and each page has actually been constructed.  What a human sees when they look at a website is different to what a search engine sees... and given it will probably be search engines that will be driving new customers to your shiny new website it would make a whole lot of sense to have a website that looks nice to the search engines not just to us humans.  The technical term for “looking nice to a search engine” is “search engine optimisation” and is the rather black art of ensuring that your website ranks as highly as possible in the search engine results.  Most web designers overlook this point as they do not have skills in this area and their client do not know to ask for this or how to assess whether it has been done (well) or not.

Web designers

While choosing a website designer should not be taken lightly it need not be an arduous task... searching the web for a website designer in your area might be a good way to start the hunt.  If the designer’s website appeared on the first page of Google this would tend to indicate that they knew how to optimise websites from a search engine’s point of view, if it appeared on page 2 or 3 or not at all then it might be worth passing them over.  Next, if their website looked up to scratch and their portfolio mirrored this high standard then you know you are on the right path!  Alternatively, you found us on the web (so you know we can search engine optimise)... so why not give us a bell to discuss your requirements... you could do a lot worse!!
